BREAKING: 2020 WCWS Cancelled

Featured

There will be no Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City this year.

The NCAA announced this afternoon that all remaining men’s and women’s championships for winter and spring sports have been cancelled.

Per the NCAA on Twitter: “Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men’s and women’s 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.”

Northwestern head coach Kate Drohan, the President of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, told D1Softball:

“I’m absolutely heartbroken for everyone in our community – the student-athletes, coaches and staff who have worked so hard for the opportunity to compete this season – and the fans who have fallen in love with our sport,” Drohan said. “My heart especially hurts for those seniors in our game. But the health and wellness of those same people and our community are the most important priority. I know we all look forward to getting back on the field as soon as we can.”
