Texas Shortstop Viviana Martinez to Miss 2025 Season
Top StoriesTexas shortstop Viviana Martinez will miss the entire 2025 season with a knee injury.
Formally announced by the Longhorns on Monday, Martinez’s injury has been known for several months. What wasn’t previously known was the full timeline for her return.
“During the offseason, Texas junior shortstop Viviana (Vivi) Martinez suffered a knee injury that required surgery and will result in the Tolleson, Arizona native missing the entire 2025 softball season,” the school said in a statement.
Martinez’s injury, which was a non-contact injury that occurred during practice in October, will sideline her for her true junior season. She will have two years of eligibility remaining when she returns to the field for the 2026 campaign.
“While we will, undoubtedly, miss Vivi’s physical skills on the field of play, her presence in the dugout, at practice and within the team will still play an important role in the success of this team,” Texas head coach Mike White said in a statement. “Her leadership, calm demeanor, and passion for the game manifests her maturity as a person and athlete. With the best medical care and rehabilitation at The University of Texas, there is no doubt Vivi will return in 2026 stronger and eager to continue her quest to lead this program to a national championship.”
In two seasons at Texas, Martinez has played in 125 career games and owns career numbers including a .361 batting average, ten home runs, 32 doubles, and 104 RBIs.
