FGCL Insider: Illinois State’s Leonard, others stand out early

Florida Gulf Coast League

BRADENTON, Fla. — The Myakka City RiverMocs remain tied for first place in the Florida Gulf Coast League with a 5-4 victory over the Bradenton Slice.

Mack Leonard (3-1) was brilliant in the circle for the Mocs, picking up a complete-game win, giving up just 2 earned runs and striking out seven. The Illinois State righthander worked both sides of the plate, mixed speeds and kept the Slice hitters off balance. Leonard gets ahead in the count and throws an effective change and knuckleball. She threw 20 first pitch strikes to 32 total batters with a 114 pitch count through seven innings.

“Mack was feeling it today. She was firing on all cylinders.” said the Mocs Head Coach Michaela Transue, “Her stuff was working really well. I think we got a little bit nervous in that first inning with a couple of people on base.”
